Cannonball Bike Run: Day 3

This day was a scenic one. Breakfast was juice, breads, cereal, and melon. We headed off through the Atlas Mountains up to about 7,500 feet. We headed about 1km up a dirt road and took a pit stop to play with some monkeys. Not in some zoo, but actually out in the wild. Quite fun creatures they are.

Then we headed off down the other side of the mountains and stopped for lunch at what would be the equivalent of a truck stop cafe. We had salad, beef/lamb, rice, and some other stuff we didn't know what it was, but was quite tasty.

This next bit of the mountains was very similar to the SoCal mountain roads we have. It was quite fun but the roads are still a bit slick so you can't really drag knee. Once at the bottom of the mountains we were greeted by some fantastic oasis villages. Past those we turned and headed into the Sahara desert. An hour later there was nothing but sand dunes in every direction. The roads are surprisingly good out here in the desert, better than many of the roads back home. It was fairly straight and very fast roads through the desert with the random desert village.

Our hotel is quite literally in the middle of the desert. There are sand dunes just a few hundred feet away and camels all around. Shortly after we got here we had a small sand storm that came and went pretty quick. We took a dip in the pool and had some drinks and got ready for dinner. Another small sand storm came through this one with a few drops of rain in it.

We had a buffet dinner with various meats, rice, breads, melons. Probably the best meal we've had so far. The some drinks and chatting before heading off to bed. There was a decent rain over night but nothing too heavy. We have an activity in the morning and some time to relax.

Our hotel is the Kasbah Tomboctou... yes, we are in Timbuctou like the slang term.

Pictures for the last two days should be up shortly.
